On my office desk stand Ball Jars filled with dried flowers. When I look at them, I think of my travels through America and the many places where I encountered these jars. Over the years, I have built up quite a collection myself. I have always been particularly drawn to the blue, purple, and green ones.
At home, we use the current Ball Mason Jars as drinking glasses and for storing fruit. For me, the joy of collecting and their very practical use go hand in hand. That is why, at American Heritage, you will find not only the classic jars but also special colors and editions that deserve a second look.
My encounters with Ball Jars in America
I have traveled extensively throughout the USA. My memories of Ball Jars include visits to Colonial Williamsburg, browsing antique shops in New England, the well-known Farmers Markets, and the Country Living Fair. I have discovered these jars in many different places and have always enjoyed taking a closer look at them. Anyone who has started collecting Ball Mason Jars might know the feeling: suddenly, you notice differences you would have overlooked before. A different lettering, a unique shape, or a shade of color still missing from your own collection. A familiar everyday object turns into something you look out for while traveling.
The story behind the American mason jars
The name Mason Jar goes back to John Landis Mason. He patented a screw-top lid for canning jars in 1858. Ball began manufacturing similar jars in 1884. Today, the two names are closely linked but refer to different things: "Mason Jar" describes the type of glass, while "Ball" is the brand. Originally, the goal was to preserve the harvest. Fruits, vegetables, and homemade supplies were put into jars. This connection to American cuisine has been preserved to this day. At the same time, the jars are used as drinking vessels, for storage, or for flowers. Their embossed lettering makes them easily recognizable.
What makes Ball Jars interesting for collectors
When collecting, it is worth distinguishing between historical jars and newer special editions. An old original can fascinate through its origin, shape, and the signs of its use. With a modern edition, the focus might be on a special color, a motif, or an anniversary. The lettering can be helpful for roughly dating historical Ball Jars, as the logo changed over the years. An embossed patent date, however, does not automatically reveal the jar's year of manufacture. The number on the bottom of many old Ball Jars is also a mold number, not a year. If you are collecting your first jars, you can easily start with a theme. Perhaps you especially like blue jars. Maybe you want to line up different sizes or are interested in editions with striking embossing. This is how a collection grows to match your own taste. For used finds, it is worth taking a close look at the rim, threads, and surface. For a collection, the condition and verifiable details about the piece are helpful. A modern special edition with a nostalgic design should be described as such.
Colored Ball Mason Jars in blue, purple, and green
I used to collect the colorful Ball Jars myself. Blue, purple, and green are decorative on their own. If you place the jars next to each other, the different colors become particularly beautiful. A bright location allows the glass tones to come into their own. Colored jars are also part of the history of modern Ball special editions. One example is the Heritage Collection, whose three-year series concluded in 2015 with purple jars. Such re-releases pick up on the appreciation for historical shapes and are independent collecting themes. Therefore, a color alone does not necessarily tell you anything certain about the age of a jar. Especially when buying a supposed vintage piece, it is worth looking at the specific version. For the sake of enjoying the jar, you can of course simply decide based on which color you like.
Special Ball Jars at American Heritage
In our selection of Ball Mason Jars and accessories, you will find classic shapes and special variants. If you are collecting Ball Jars or looking for a single beautiful piece, it is worth comparing the embossings and colors.
Sunshine with embossed sun motif
The Ball Mason Jar Sunshine Pint features a sun relief. The limited edition is just as suitable as a drinking glass as it is for a small floral arrangement. With a capacity of about 473 ml, it has the classic pint size. The motif remains visible if you use the jar simply and let the embossing speak for itself.
Americana with star relief
The Limited Edition Americana refers to the 250 years of the USA with its star motif. It appeals to people who feel a connection to America and can be combined with classic Ball Jars. As a gift, the motif is also a lovely starting point for a personal card.
Colored quart jars in green and pink
With the Green Quart and Pink Quart, you can also find colored versions in our range. A quart corresponds to about 946 ml. As a vase or a decorative glass on a shelf, these larger models set a clearly visible color accent.
How we use Ball Jars at home and in the office
At our house, the current jars are regularly on the table as drinking glasses. Water, juice, or cold iced tea fit well in them. Especially in a mixed group, different embossings and colors are welcome to come together. That makes a table lively and leaves room for personal favorites. We also use the jars for storing fruit. Thanks to the glass, the contents are easy to see. Depending on the fruit and preparation, it belongs in the refrigerator; closing the jar does not replace cooling. Anyone who fills jars frequently can look for a wide opening: the so-called Wide-Mouth jars are easy to fill and clean. On my desk, dried flowers have moved in. That takes little: a few loosely arranged stems are enough so that the jar remains visible with its shape and embossing. This idea can also be beautifully implemented on a windowsill or a small side table. If you would like to use your jars in the kitchen as well, you will find further ideas for breakfast, salads, and soups in our article about meal prep with Ball Jars.

Ball Jars as gifts and at Christmas
A special jar is a lovely gift for people who like America or enjoy selected items for their home. With a small filling and a handwritten card, it becomes personal. After unpacking, it can continue to be used as a drinking glass, vase, or storage jar. At Christmas, Ball Jars can, for example, be filled with small cookies or gourmet popcorn. A ribbon and a name tag are enough as decoration. For a winter scene in a jar, small fir trees and battery-operated LED fairy lights work well. With a special edition, I would deliberately leave the embossing and the glass color visible. In our accessories, you will also find decorative "Merry Merry" lids and snowflake inserts for Regular-Mouth jars. Choose the closure to match the contents; an open decorative insert does not replace a closed storage lid.
