The History of Black Friday:
Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, has long been considered the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. However, its origins and evolution are truly fascinating.
Originally, the term "Black Friday" was coined by police in Philadelphia in the 1960s to describe the chaos caused by the crowds and traffic as people flooded the city for the Army-Navy football game and kicked off their Christmas shopping. The "black" referred not to sales figures, but to the hectic, sometimes dangerous nature of the day.
In the 1980s, retailers reclaimed the term, turning it into a positive event—it came to represent the point when stores would "go into the black," or become profitable for the year. The day became known for major discounts, where shoppers could take advantage of deals traditionally available only in the final weeks before Christmas.
Over the years, Black Friday has grown into a major shopping event not only in the U.S. but globally. With the rise of online shopping, it’s no longer limited to physical stores. Today, retailers offer "Black Friday" deals as early as November 1st, and the sales period has expanded into what’s now known as Black Week, starting a week before the actual day, with some deals even extending through Cyber Monday and beyond.
